HADLEY, MA – Williams College senior co-captain and shortstop Matt Kastner (Mendham, NJ) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week.
Kastner moved from second base last spring to shortstop this spring and he has been tearing the cover off the ball.
Kastner hit .654 in a 5-2 week for the Ephs, including a 7-for-7 performance in a 20-2 win over Middlebury that set a school record for hits in a single game. Batting leadoff, his .719 on-base percentage resulted in him scoring 14 runs in those seven games and he also stole three bases.
In the Ephs' three-game sweep of Middlebury, he went 10-for-16 (.633) with a double, triple and seven runs scored.
Thus far this spring Kastner is leading the Ephs in hitting with a .583 average (21 for 36), hits with 21 and runs scored with 18. Of his 21 hits three have been doubles and one was a triple.
Tuesday evening the Eastern College Athletic Conference announced that Kastner and J.C. Martinez a catcher for Endicott College shared the ECAC-New England DIII Player of the Week award.
Kastner has also lettered for four years in soccer where he played primarily at forward.
