TUCSON, AZ. -- Sophomore Luke Rodino tossed a complete-game in the opener Saturday and classmate Jack Roberts drove home five runs in the nightcap as the Williams College baseball team swept a doubleheader from NESCAC West Division rival Middlebury College, 6-3 and 12-6 at the Kino Sports Complex.
The Ephs improved to 6-3 overall, 3-0 in the NESCAC West, while the Panthers slipped to 0-9, 0-3 in the West Division. Williams is back in action Sunday fro a doubleheader against Grace University.
Game one was a back and forth affair, with Williams rallying from 1-0 and 3-2 deficits. The Ephs took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third when Adam Regensburg led off with a single, Roberts followed with a single and Phil McGovern singled home Regensburg.Luke Pierce's sacrifice fly scored Roberts with the go-ahead run,
The Ephs tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth on another McGovern RBI-single and a RBI-fielder's choice from Pierce.
Rodino made it all stand up, scattering eight hits over seven innings and not walking a batter while striking out six Panthers. Regensburg, Roberts and McGovern were each 2 for 3 in the victory.
In the nightcap, Roberts went 4 for 5 with 5 RBI while McGovern was 3 for 5 with a double, triple and 2 RBI. Danny Smith got the win, throwing the first five-plus innings. Eddie Kelly tossed three scoreless innings of relief and Arnie Capute finished off the win.
