WHITTIER, CA — Williams College senior Luke Rodino tossed a complete-game six-hitter Saturday to help the Ephs even their record at 2-2 with a 3-2 win over Whittier College in a game played at the Poets' Memorial Field.
Williams (2-2) will face Claremont Mudd Scripps Sunday at 11 a.m. to conclude the California part of their spring break trip.
Saturday, it was Rodino's turn to shine as the Ephs' ace rebounded from allowing two Poet runs in the second to shut out the home team over the final seven frames while allowing only three hits. At one point Rodino retired 16 of 17 batters he faced from the third through the eighth innings.
He finished allowing just six hits and one walk while striking out four over nine full innings to improve to 1-0 on the season.
Rodino's teammates rallied from the early 2-0 defiicit to score two times in the fifth and once in the seventh to take the 3-2 lead that would ultimately stand up.
In the Williams fifth, senior Jackson Parese got things started with a single and took third when Jack Cloud laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on a fielding error. Kellen Hatheway then dropped down another bunt that went for an RBI-single and Jack Roberts' followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Cloud with the tying run.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Cloud tripled to deep center field.Hatheway followed with a tiebreaking RBI-single back up the middle.
Rodino made the lead stand up, retiring the Poets in order in the seventh. In the eighth, he allowed a one-out single but got some help when he struck out the next batter and Eph catcher Alex Panstares cut down the runner attempting to steal second.
In the Whittier ninth, Rodino gave up a one-out single, but induced the next two batters to fly out to center field to put the finishing touches on his gem.
Williams had 10 hits in the win. Cloud was 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Hatheway was 2 for 5 with two RBI. Roberts was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
