HADLEY, MA -- Williams College senior RB Ryan Lupo (Princeton Junction, NJ) was named the NESCAC Offensive Player of the Week and classmate Pat Barren, a LB from Worthington, OH, was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week for their roles in the Ephs' 33-15 win over Bowdoin to open the season.
Lupo, the NESCAC's leading rusher last year with 107 yards a game, racked up an impressive 167 yards on the ground versus the Polar Bears on 31 carries. He averaged 5.4 yards per carry and scored two TDs. Lupo also chipped in with two pass receptions good for 18 yards as the Ephs gave new head coach Aaron Kelton a win in his first game at Williams.
Barren, who has played in both the secondary and at LB showed he has fully recovered from the injuries a year ago that limited his participation. Against Bowdoin Barren recorded seven tackles, four solos, two for a loss, two pass break-ups, recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass that he returned 53 yards for a game-changing score with 5:29 to pay in the third quarter. Barren's pick came when he leaped up to snare a Bowdoin pass with two hands over his head and then out ran the Polar Bears to the end zone.
Barren, who also letters in baseball as an outfielder, shared the Defensive Player of the week award with Wesleyan's Justin Freres.
