Junior return specialist Darren Hartwell (North Reading, MA) has been named the NESCAC Special Teams Player of the Week for the week ending October 23, 2011.
Hartwell's performance found him racking up 229 all-purpose yards, including a school-record 77-yard punt return for a touchdown.
The new mark broke the previous record of 73 yards set by Scott Farley '03 in 2001, and is the second Williams school record established by Hartwell.
The Ephs claimed their first win at home this season, 38-17 over the Jumbos. Their record has bumped up to 3-2 and they have won two in a row.
Hartwell's exceptional punt return helped the Ephs break a14-14 tie and later take a 28-14 lead at halftime. Along with his punt return yards, Hartwell notched 74 yards on three kick-off returns and 61 yards on four receptions, which featured a 33-yard TD catch and run.
Last season, Hartwell broke his first school record at Williams when he recorded 10 TD catches.
Hartwell currently leads the NESCAC in all-purpose yards in 2011 with 985. He is third in reception yards per game (94.2) and fourth in receptions per game (6.40).
On the season, Hartwell has accumulated 471 yards on 32 total receptions with four touchdown runs. He averages 14.7 yards per catch.
With 14 punt returns, Hartwell is posting 15.1 yards per return, 221 total yards and one touchdown. Eleven kickoff returns have brought Hartwell 274 yards, averaging 24.9 yards per kick return. He is also tallying 197 all-purpose yards per game.
The Ephs will next face the Hamilton Continentals (2-3) on Weston Field Saturday and kick off is set for 1:00 P.M.
