Ephs Suffer First Loss of the Season in Double Overtime

BRUNSWICK, ME- After double overtime, the Williams College Ephs (3-1, 1-1 NESCAC) suffer their first loss of the season against the Bowdoin Polar Bears (3-1, NESCAC 3-1) 3-2.

The Ephs began the day with an early 13:42 goal by senior Alex Bennett assisted by junior Meredith Wright. The tally was answered back by Bowdoin at 20:50 with a net by Elizabeth Bennewitz. In the first half, the Ephs totaled 6 shots on goal, while the Polar Bears totaled 3.

At the half, Williams goalie Emma Santucci had 2 tough saves allowing 1 goal while Bowdoin goalie Maddie Ferrucci had 5 saves. Abby Lloyd took over in the box for Santucci and played through the next half and two overtimes, totaling 9 saves and allowing two goals.

Bennett started the second half strong for the Ephs, netting a ball at 38:58 but was quickly tied back by a Bowdoin goal by Kara Finnerty assisted by Elizabeth Bennewitz at 40:19. Lloyd defended the Ephs goalbox with 7 great saves, moving the game into overtime. Ephs coach Alix Barrale praised her goalie, noting "Abby had some sensational saves, especially some back-to-back that she kept going at."

The first overtime proved no goals for either team, with two shots by sophomore Nina McGowan at 76:09 and junior Meredith Wright at 85:00, both saved by Ferrucci. Lloyd blocked a deciding shot from Bowdoin's Maggie Ford at 73:20.

At 87:26, the finishing goal of the game was scored by Bennewitz, ending the game at 3-2 in Bowdoin's favor. On the loss, Barrele stated "It's hard to be disappointed when we played so well. As a defensive unit we were strong, and it's a great indicator of where we are as a team because Bowdoin is a great team for a reason."

The Ephs next match up will be at home against Smith College at 6:30pm.
