Williams, MA – The Williams College Ephs (11-3, NESCAC 6-3) were topped by the Tufts Jumbos (10-4, NESCAC 7-2) in an intense battle between two top ten nationally ranked teams.
The Ephs and Jumbos started the game in a back and forth battle for control over the ball. The Jumbos had the game's first opportunity at 5:14 with a shot, but the Ephs defense stopped it before it could reach the net. Five minutes later the Jumbos attacked again with a shot from senior Mary Travers but was thwarted by senior Hanna Goodrick.
Williams first attempt came off of a penalty corner at 18:58, but the Ephs did not find the back of the net. Tufts opened up the scoring at 25:47 off of a shot from sophomore Rachel Hamilton who received the ball from Mary Travers.
Williams ended the first half by putting pressure on the Tufts goalie. Junior Libby Dolan sent a cross through the Tufts defense, but unfortunately, the Ephs could not connect.
At the end of the first half Tufts were up 1-0. Junior Ephs goalie Emma Santucci started the game but was subbed out for sophomore Abby Lloyd at 18:56. Santucci saw a lot of pressure but no shots. Lloyd saw 2 shots and saved one. Senior Tufts goalie Emily Polinski saw and saved one shot at the half.
The second half started similarly to the first, both teams battling for control of the ball but after five minutes Jumbos scored their second goal of the game at 40:00 from Mary Travers.
After the Jumbos goal, Williams went on the attack and had three shot attempts on net, but were stopped once by the goalie and twice off of defensive saves. The Ephs continued the attack throughout the half and outshot the Jumbos 7 to 3 in the second half. The final score was 2-0 in favor of the Jumbos
Eph goalie Abby Lloyd finished the game with 2 saves and the Jumbos goalie Emily Polinski finished the game with 5 saves.
Head Coach Alix Barrale commented on the Ephs second-half performance, "I felt like we came alive in the second half and played the way we normally play. It was nice to see that we outshot and out-cornered them, but unfortunately, we did not end up finishing today"
The Ephs plan to bounce back next Tuesday against the Middlebury on the 24th at 6:30 PM.
