New London, CT— Libby Dolan's goal lifts the Williams College Ephs (6-1, NESCAC 4-1) to a 1-0 victory over the Connecticut College Mules (2-7, NESCAC 0-5) in a Saturday afternoon showdown.
The Ephs came off of a midweek 3-0 win against Springfield College. The Mules are looking to bounce back after an away loss to Trinity college.
The Ephs opened up the scoring with a goal from senior Libby Dolan off of the feed from sophomore Claire Fitzpatrick (21:14). The goal was Libby's sixth of the season. The Ephs continued to keep the pressure up and continued to fire on the net, but Mules defense was able to hold the Ephs to 1 goal in the first half.
At the half, Junior goalie Abby Lloyd took over for senior Emma Santucci, who finished the first half with three saves and no goals allowed. The Mules goalie Jackie Mountford would stay in the game. She had three saves at the end of the first half. The Ephs outshot the Mules 11 (4 on goal) to 7 (3 on goal) at the end of the first half.
Coming out of the half, the Ephs continued to pressure the Mules. With 6:30 left in the second half, the Mules gave up a penalty shot to the Ephs. Senior Meredith Wright was elected to take the shot, but the effort was thwarted by Mule goalie Jackie Mountford was able to get her gloves to the ball to keep the Mules within one.
After the shot, the Mules picked up the pressure and attempted to level the score, but the Ephs were able to clear the circle of the danger. Both teams had opportunities within the last 2 minutes of play, but both sides were able to hold off the other and the game ending 1-0 in favor of the Ephs.
The Ephs next game is 4 pm on October 2 at Skidmore College.
