SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY- The Williams College Ephs (6-2) fell to the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds (4-6) in double overtime on a goal by senior Gabby Hyman at 85:19.
The Ephs got off to a hot start in the first half with two shots on goal by junior Emma Ticknor in the first 3 minutes of the game. Thoroughbred goalkeeper Elizabeth Coughlin saved both shots but was unable to defend a tight shot from senior Meredith Wright at 3:58 for the Ephs first goal of the game. The goal was assisted by Ticknor.
The Ephs and Thoroughbreds kept a battle for dominance going in the first half, with a rally of shots around 17:45 for Ephs junior Charlotte Cooper and sophomore Molly Lohss but Coughlin defended cleanly. The EPhs pushed back again with a couple more shots by sophomores Simone Veale and Claire Fitzpatrick at 24:10 and 28:26 but couldn't find the back of the net.
After a back and forth half, the Thoroughbreds threatened just before halftime with two shots by senior Emily Richmond and first-year Hannah Curtis at 31:45 and 34:10 but couldn't get past Eph goalkeeper Emma Santucci.
At the half, Skidmore goalkeeper Coughlin had 6 saves and Santucci had 2 saves. Junior Abby Lloyd would take over in the box for the Ephs in the second half and would remain through the two overtimes.
The Thoroughbreds took the pressure from the first half right into the second half and found a gap in the Eph defense for a goal at 38:48 by senior Grace Florsheim assisted by sophomore Natalie Metzger. The Ephs took control then, moving the ball to the opposite side of the field for a hard shot by senior Libby Dolan at 37:32 that was deflected by Coughlin. The Thoroughbreds took the lead at 44:15 off a hard goal by first-year Gabrielle Vaccaro assisted by senior Marissa Folts.
But the Ephs wasted no time with a comeback and tied the game up with a liner by senior Julia Cochran at 45:22 assisted by Meredith Wright. The Ephs kept control and found the back of the net again off a the stick of Veale to bring the Ephs up 3-2. Williams threatened multiple times for a fourth goal with two hard shots by Dolan at 61:23 and 63:24 but Coughlin stood steady in the box.
With 6 minutes left in the half, Thoroughbred Gabby Hyman found a shot through the Eph defense to tie the game at 64:04. The end of regular time saw both teams at 3-3.
The first overtime began as a battle for dominance, both teams trying to find command of the ball and end the game. The Ephs threatened again with an early shot by Claire Fitzpatrick at 70:28 but was saved. Neither team found any shots for the rest of the overtime period, with a penalty corner for each team respectively.
The second overtime found the Thoroughbreds taking charge, and after a 84:15 penalty corner, Hyman once again found the back of the net for a game-ending 85:19 goal.
The Ephs next matchup will be a NESCAC game away versus Hamilton College on Tuesday, October 9th at 6pm.
