MEDFORD, MA- The WIlliams College Ephs (10-4, NESCAC 6-3) were blanked by the Tufts Jumbos (12-1, NESCAC 7-1) with two second half goals by Claire Foley and Gigi Tutoni.
The Ephs kicked things off with hardworking defense as the Jumbos threatened early with a 1:36 penalty corner but the Ephs defenders knocked the ball away before the Jumbos could take a shot. Eph senior Libby Dolan had the only shot of the half for the Ephs at 4:21 but was deflected by Jumbo goalie Andie Stallman. The Ephs threatened with two penalty corners at 5:17 and 6:08, but could not convert the play.
It became a battle of the defense then for the Ephs as both teams fought for dominance of the ball. Rachel Hamilton tried for a shot at 9:51 but was thwarted by Eph keeper Emma Santucci. The Jumbos then picked up a penalty corner at 16:42 but the Eph defenders kept them at bay and cleared the ball from the circle. The Ephs threatened for a final time with a penalty corner at 25:31 but could not find a solid shot on goal.
The Jumbos took advantage of the last 5 minutes of play and forced a 31:02 penalty corner. Hamilton then volleyed 3 shots in a row that Santucci buckled down and kicked out at 32:18, 32:23 and 32:29 ending the half scoreless for both teams.
Abby Lloyd would take over for Santucci in the box at the half. Santucci had four saves and did not allow a goal.
The Eph defense was not given any break as the Jumbos jumped right into action in the second half with early back to back penalty corners at 37:42 and 38:49 producing a shot by Sophie Schoeni that was turned away by Lloyd and cleared by the defense. But the ball was quickly turned around by Claire Foley and found the back of the net behind a diving Lloyd to put the Jumbos up 1-0. The Jumbos rallied for two more penalty corners at 46:09 and 48:09 and saw another Schoeni shot that hit the pad of Lloyd and bounced away.
Another penalty corner at 48:54 kept the ball in the circle for two minutes until a scoring opportunity came for Gigi Tutoni who snuck past Lloyd to net the second goal of the game and put the Jumbos up 2-0.
After another battle for dominance, Libby Dolan broke away for a shot at the 65th minute but was turned aside by Stallman. The Jumbos notched another penalty corner at 59:27 but the Eph defense pushed the Jumbos back and out of scoring position. The game would remain in a back and forth limbo, both teams threatening with Jumbo shots by Melissa Manzello and Gillian Roeca at 66:21 and 67:54 off two penalty corners but could not get past Lloyd.
In the final 5 seconds of the game Dolan took a final shot at the Jumbo goal but could not find a gap in Stallman's defense ending the game at 2-0.
The Ephs next game will be their final regular seaon NESCAC matchup against Middlebury at home on October 23rd at 6:30pm
