MIDDLEBURY, VT- The Williams College Ephs (12-5) fell to the Tufts Jumbos (16-1) in the NESCAC semifinals 3-0. Two goals by Jumbo Gigi Tutoni at 5:30 and 48:36 and a final goal by Gillian Roeca at 58:29 pushed the Jumbos ahead.
The Jumbos came out firing early with a penalty corner at 5:30 that Sophie Schoeni crossed to Tutoni that hit the edge of goalkeep Emma Santucci's pad and trickled into the goal to put the Jumbos up 1-0.
The first half became a battle of defense for the Ephs and the Jumbos, both teams keeping the ball in midfield. The Ephs threatened with 8 minutes left in the half with sophomore Molly Lohss breaking away down the middle of the field but her one on one shot with keeper Andie Stallman was padded away.
The teams went into halftime in a close game. Junior Abby Lloyd took over for Santucci in the goalbox. Santucci allowed one goal and had no saves.
The second half continued much like the first, both defenses fending off hungry offenses. Tufts finally broke through with a penalty corner at 48:36 that found Gillian Roeca who passed the shot on to Tutoni who sunk the ball over the shoulder of Lloyd to make it a 2-0 lead.
Another penalty corner at 58:29 came to Beth Krikorian who rocketed the ball but hit the post and Roeca took the redirected ball into the corner of the net.
The Ephs could not find an offensive edge as the minutes ticked down in the second half.
