WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Apparently Mike Mayer's first post-Williams basketball "interview" was a success.
The former Eph four-year letterman and All-American impressed at the European Summer Basketball League (ESBL) tryouts in Leon, Spain, July 14-18 and he has been extended a 10-day contract by Spanish Third Division League team Azpeitia Azkoitia ISB. Azpeitia is located on the north coast of Spain and close to the French border.
Contacted shortly after arriving in Spain for the second time in two months, Mayer stated, "It's a 10-day trial but should become a full year if I don't mess up!" Under Spanish Third Division league rules each team is allowed two non-European Union players on its roster.
A successful 10-day showing now will land Mayer a contract for a year with Azpeitia Azkoitia ISB.
Mayer's quest to play professionally in European began with his participation in the ESBL tryouts that are held to showcase players interested in playing in Europe.
At the ESBL showcase Mayer not only ran into former rival Aaron Toomey of Amherst the two residents of North Carolina ended up as teammates and roommates. The pairing of an Eph and a Jeff proved to be quite successful as Mayer was the showcase MVP and Toomey earned First Team honors.
In the first clip Toomey is number 16 in white and Mayer is number 33. You will not need long to see the excellent passing of Toomey, the plethora of inside moves in Mayer's repertoire, and Toomey's long range shooting ability.
Mayer concluded his Eph career by leading the Ephs to second place in the NCAA Division III Tournament averaging a double double in the tourney. He scored 20.8 point a game and collected 12.8 rebounds. In all Mayer led three Eph teams to
Mayer graduated as the seventh leading all-time scorer at Williams with 1,469 points and he collected 716 rebounds, placing him sixth all-time at Williams.
Mayer and Toomey appear destined to become rivals once again. Toomey has signed with Fuenlabrada, which also plays in the Spanish Third Division.
