NORTH ADAMS, MA -- Williams' freshman guard Bobby Casey sank a three-pointer from the right corner with 59.0 seconds left in the contest to put the Ephs (3-0) up 75-71 over the MCLA Trail Blazers (2-2). After an MCLA bucket by sophomore forward Joe Wiggins, Eph sophomore guard Cole Teal nailed the decisive three to give Williams a 78-73 lead with 16.6 seconds remaining. The Ephs would go on to win the game 80-73.
"I'm proud of this team. We talk about having a right now mentality and not to worry about foul calls, turnovers, and missed shots. I'm proud that they stuck with it, stayed confident, and stayed poised," said Eph head coach Kevin App.
After trading the lead for the first 15 minutes, MCLA senior guard Paul Maurice sunk a three to put the Trail Blazers up 35-29 with 5:16 remaining in the first half.
Williams responded with an 8-0 run capped by an offensive board and put back finish by freshman swingman Kyle Scadlock.
18 points from junior swingman Daniel Aronowitz including two three-pointers near the end of the half helped Williams build a 45-39 halftime lead.
MCLA opened up the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 46-45 lead. Scadlock would take the lead back for the Ephs on a fast break dunk with 9:56 remaining in the game. MCLA junior center Dakari Hannah-Wornum gave the Trail Blazers a 61-60 lead with a put back finish with 6:51 left. Aronowitz responded with a three-pointer from the top of the key to put the Ephs back on top 63-61.
Aronowitz finished and converted an and-one with 4:07 left to push the Ephs lead to 68-62.
After trailing by as much as 8, MCLA junior guard Careem Kirksey drilled a three from the right wing with 2:07 left to pull the Blazers within one point.
MCLA could not get over the hump, and clutch shooting by Teal and Casey in the final minute propelled Williams to victory.
"It's hard to play on the road. It's a hard adjustment every year. Today, the starters set the tone and guys came in and played hard off the bench. Our guys were able to make enough plays to pull it out," said App.
Aronowitz led the Ephs with 32 points.
Maurice led the Blazers with 20.
Williams plays at Manhattanville on Sunday, November 29th at 3:00 P.M.
