Williams Falls At Amherst 78-66

AMHERST, MA—In the 217th meeting between the two teams, 9th ranked Amherst (11-1) defeated the Williams Ephs (8-4) 78-66 in Lefrak Gymnasium. Amherst hit 12 three-pointers and held a comfortable lead for most of the game and led by as many as 14.

Both teams struggled with their outside shooting in the early going. It was only a matter of time before one of the teams would heat up.

In a six-minute span, Amherst guards Jeff Racy and Connor Green combined for five threes to help Amherst build a 30-19 lead with 6:30 remaining in the half. The Ephs would fight back and pull to within 5 on a Bobby Casey layup with 48.0 seconds remaining. Amherst guard Johnny McCarthy drilled a three-pointer just after the halftime buzzer that was waved off. Amherst led 37-32 at halftime.

Williams' guards Kyle Scadlock, Bobby Casey, and Cole Teal aggressively attacked the basket throughout the half to help keep in the Ephs in the game. 20 of Williams' 32 first half points came in the paint.

Scadlock led the Ephs with 9 points. Green and Racy each had 11 for the Jeffs.

Williams got off to a fast start in the second half. Scadlock assisted senior center Edward Flynn to cut Amherst's lead to 37-36 with 18:30 remaining. After a timeout, Amherst went on a 10-0 run capped off by a Green layup with 16:14 to go in the contest.

Amherst would retain a lead of around 10 points for the next several minutes. Casey drilled a three-pointer from the left corner with 8:50 remaining to cut Amherst's lead 61-53. Amherst forward Eric Conklin scored down low and then Green hit a three from the top of the key to give Amherst a 66-53 lead, their largest of the night to that point. Amherst would not look back the rest of the game. Williams would get no closer than 9 as Amherst closed out the final minutes to win 78-66.

Amherst had a balanced scoring attack that saw four guys reach double figures in points. Green led the team with 16 points.

Flynn shot 7-7 from the field and scored 16 points to lead the Ephs.
