WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—The Williams Ephs (10-5) drilled 13 three-pointers en route to a 75-66 victory over the Colby Mules (10-4). With the victory, the Ephs move to 1-2 in NESCAC play while Colby falls to 0-3.
"In league play if you can take care of your home court that puts you in a good position. As disappointed as we are with last weekend, we have to forget about it. I was proud of the guys' energy and enthusiasm tonight, especially in the first half," said Williams head coach Kevin App.
Williams made its first 5 three-point attempts of the game, including three from junior swingman Daniel Aronowitz to take a 21-12 lead with 12:42 left in the first half. Colby dominated the offensive glass early in the game despite a clear height disadvantage, but was unable to consistently convert their second chances into points. Freshman guard Bobby Casey threw up the Ephs' first missed shot of the night with 11:59 left, but senior center Ed Flynn scored consecutive baskets inside to push Williams' early lead to 25-12, forcing Colby to take an early timeout.
The Ephs continued to score at an extremely effective rate, finding open three's or layups on seemingly every offensive possession. Aronowitz nailed his fifth three-pointer of the half to put Williams up 40-26 with 3:41 remaining in the half. The Ephs would end up taking a 44-30 lead into halftime.
Williams shot 17-31 (54.8%) from the field in the first half, including 8-16 from three-point range. Colby shot just 12-35 (34.3%) in the half.
Aronowitz led the Ephs with 17 points and 7 rebounds, making all five of his three-point attempts.
Colby senior guard Luke Westman led the Mules with 12 points at the break.
Sophomore guard Cole Teal hit a three on the Ephs' first possession to give Williams its largest lead of the game at 47-30. The Mules would answer with a 5-0 run to cut their deficit to 12. After Aronowitz hit one of two free throws, Colby senior forward Sam Willson hit back to back threes to trim Williams' lead to 48-40 with 17:34 left in the game.
Mules senior guard John Gallego made a layup with 10:33 left to cut Williams' lead to 55-49, but Teal would respond with a three to push the Ephs' lead back to 9. Mules senior forward Ryan Jann's finish inside with 7:45 left brought Colby back to within 6. Junior guard Joseph Connelly nailed a three from the left wing just over a minute later to make 60-57. Willson then tied the game with a three of his own, capping off an 11-0 run for Colby.
"[Colby] is a really good basketball team with a lot of seniors. We knew they weren't going to fold. Even after they came back, we were able to keep our composure and poise," said Coach App.
Williams freshmen swingman Kyle Scadlock regained the lead for the Ephs by making two free throws. Casey then drilled a three from the top of the key on the Ephs' next possession to make it 65-60. After a defensive stop, Casey hit another three to put the Ephs up 8 with 3:08 to go. Jann made two free throws to cut it to 68-62 with 2:51 remaining, but Colby would not get any closer the rest of the game.
"I was a little disappointed with our focus coming out in the second half, but I'm proud of our guys who stepped up and made big plays. Ed hit big free throws, Bobby and Cole both hit big shots. We'll take it," said Coach App.
Aronowitz led the Ephs with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Teal added 17 points.
Willson led Colby with 20.
