Fitchburg, MA – The Williams College Ephs (6-0) downed the Fitchburg State Falcons (2-5) 109-41 in a midweek matchup.
The Ephs had the hot hand early, outscoring the Falcons 32-8 through the first 10 minutes of action. Four Eph players went 100% from the field during the first twenty minutes of action propelling the Ephs to a 57-26 lead at the half.
"Really proud of the guys," said eph head coach Kevin App. "To get off the bus on a Thursday night after traveling down here after class and come out and set the tone with our defensive energy that carried over to the offense. Our focus and defensive energy early was the reason why the result was what it was. "
At the half, the Ephs were shooting 63.6% from the field and 53.8% from behind the arc. The Eph's statistical leaders were Bobby Casey with 20 points, Matt Karpowicz with 9 rebounds, and Michael Kempton with 3 assists. The Falcons were shooting 31% from the field and 27.3% from behind the arc. They were led by Nicholas Tracy with 7 points, Andre Ruff with 3 rebounds, and had two players with 2 assists.
The Ephs built on their lead keeping the Falcons to only 15 points in the second half. The Ephs put up 52 points, and sophomore Marc Taylor would finish his prolific scoring by scoring the last 7 points for the Ephs.
"That's the best part of every year seeing guys step up with some confidence," stated coach App on watching his young players during the first games of the season. "Marc has been playing great all year. From coming in early in the game and making plays and playing with confidence, then at the end of the game seeing him playing as a leader with some of the freshmen. Watching that growth has been the rewarding part. Mickey Babek continues to play with confidence, Vince Brookins, Jr. as well. Spencer Spivy came in and hit shots. That's what these games are for, to get experience and confidence. Our leaders have been doing a great job with this group."
The Ephs shot 59.1% from the field and 61.5% from behind the arc. Leading the Ephs in points was Bobby Casey with 26, followed by 16 from Marc Taylor. Matt Karpowicz finished with game-high 15 rebounds, and Michael Kempton finished with game-high 6 assists. The Falcons were led by Nicholas Tracy with 9 points and three rebounds.
Coach] App also commented on Saturday's game at Wesleyan saying, "It's a unique situation where it's not a conference game, but it's against a conference opponent. It's been a great game in the last few Decembers. So, we expect nothing less. It's just like the first 6 games, where it'll show us areas we need to improve in, and it's another opportunity for us to come out and compete. It'll be four straight road games, and I think our guys are looking forward to it."
The Ephs next game is on December 1st at 7 p.m. against Wesleyan University in an out of conference match up.
