Amherst, MA –The Williams College Ephs (15-1) dropped their first game of the season against The Amherst College Mammoths (13-2) in a 63-62 mid-week game between Little Three rivals.
After going down by six early in the first half, the Ephs battled back due to their ability to score in the paint. The two teams were even on all stats except the Ephs were able to get to the line more frequently than the Mammoths. The Ephs were 10-13 from the line, and the Mammoths were 4-4 from the line. The Ephs led 29-26 at halftime.
At the half, the Ephs were shooting 34.6% from the floor and 14.3% from behind the arc. Bobby Casey led the team in scoring with 9 points, and Matt Karpowicz led the team in rebounding. The Mammoths were shooting 33.3% from the floor and 50% from behind the arc. Grant Robinson led them with 9 points at the half.
The Ephs took an early 11-point lead over the Mammoths with 11 minutes left in the game, but the Mammoths were eager to fight back. Timmy McCarthy ignited a run with a three-pointer, and the Mammoths would score five more unanswered points to put the game at 49-46, Williams. After the run, the Ephs called a timeout to regroup.
With just under 3 minutes left in the game, Fru Che drilled a three at the top of the arc to put the Mammoths up 56-55. After the bucket, the Ephs called a time out. Out of the timeout, Bobby Casey drew contact while shooting a three and made 2 of three from the line to bring the Ephs up by 1. On the next possession, the Mammoths tried to answer, but Kyle Scadlock denied Joe Schneider at the basket.
On the other end, Bobby Casey found Michael Kempton for an easy left-handed lay-up. The Ephs led 59-58. With under a minute left in the game, the Ephs led by one after a James Heskett three-pointer. The Mammoths had possession, and they moved the ball to Fru Che, who would pull up from mid-range and score to put the Mammoths up 63-62. The Ephs would get one more opportunity to win the game but did not hit the final jumper of the game. The Mammoths went on to win 63-62.
At the end of 40 minutes, the Ephs shot 36.5 % from the field and 27.3% from behind the arc. Bobby Casey led the Ephs with 19 points, four rebounds, and four assists. The Mammoths shot 36.5% from the field and 47.8% from behind the arc. They were led by Garrett Day (12 points) and Fru Che (11 points).
"It was a hard-fought Williams-Amherst basketball game, and it came down to the last shot. I'm proud of our team's effort." head coach Kevin App commented on tonight's game. When asked about how this game will affect the rest of the week, coach App said, "This won't change things that much. Whether we win at the buzzer or lose at the buzzer, we will learn from this and get ready for another fun game against Middlebury on Saturday."
The Ephs next game is on January 19th at 3 p.m. at home in Chandler Gymnasium against Middlebury College.
