Williamstown, MA– The Williams College Ephs (16-2) downed the Oneonta Red Dragons (8-8) 73-54.
The two teams were tied after five minutes of play, but the Ephs would spend the next five minutes limiting the Red Dragons to only two points while scoring 12 of their own. The run would bring the score to 20-10 and result in a timeout for the Red Dragons with 10:16 left in the half.
After the timeout, the Red Dragons seemed to gain momentum, but a corner three from senior Kyle Scadlock and a four-point play by senior James Heskett would shift the momentum back in favor of the Ephs. The Ephs carried this momentum into a 40-23 lead over the Red Dragons at the end of the half.
"We played 10-11 guys in the first half. Spencer Spivy and Jovan Jones got in and played great, Jake Porath gave us some minutes because of foul trouble," commented Eph head coach Kevin App on the number of players seeing the floor in the first half. "In these mid-week games in the middle of the season it's important to keep guys energy up, and I think it invigorates some of the main rotation guys when they see the other guys that work hard in practice come out and play hard."
The Ephs shot 55.6% from the field in the first half and nailed seven three-pointers on 12 attempts. Bobby Casey (13 points, two assists), James Heskett (12 points, 3-3 3PT) and Kyle Scadlock (11 points, three rebounds) lead the Ephs in the first half. The Red Dragons were shooting 26.5% from the field and only complete 2 of 9 three-point attempts in the first. Andres Rivera (10 points, six rebound) and Joseph Bull (7 points, three rebounds) led the way for the Red Dragons.
The Ephs started the second half on a 21-4 run punctuated by a four-point play by sophomore Marc Taylor. The Ephs would maintain a hold over the Red Dragons for the remainder of the game and eventually would go on to win 73-54.
"The veterans and starters got us going in the second half," stated coach App on his team's early second-half run, "They know that no team is going to let you win. Having a lead at halftime is great, but you have to come out with your best self forward in that first five minutes. If you do, you can take the game right there."
The Ephs finished the game shooting 54.2% from the field and knocked down 11 of 23 3-point attempts. Kyle Scadlock (19 points, eight rebound), James Heskett (18 points, 5-7 3PT) and Bobby Casey (16 points, seven assists) led the Ephs in today's matchup. The Red Dragons shot 28.4% from the field and hit 5 of their 21 attempts from behind the arc. They were led by Andres Rivera (17 points, 11 rebounds) and Joseph Bull (10 points, eight rebounds)
"I think we were all excited to have a midweek game just to get back out there and put a better foot forward," commented coach App on his team's performance, "We had a great practice yesterday, and I was proud of our guys for coming out and competing and getting back to the ball movement and the togetherness we normally have."
The Ephs next game will be on January 25that 7 p.m. when they host Trinity College in chandler Gym in a NESCAC contest..
