WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Williams College Ephs (18-2) defeated the Albertus Magnus Falcons (11-7) 85-72.
The Eph defense forced a few extended cold-shooting segments by the visiting Falcons to post their 18th win of the season. "I thought it was our defensive intensity in the second half and senior leadership by James Heskett that was the difference tonight," said Eph head coach Kevin App. App also credited Marcos Soto and Spencer Spivy for their contributions off the bench for both making good decisions with the ball and keeping the ball moving on offense.
A Jahmerikah Green-Younger three gave the Albertus Magnus Falcons a three-point lead at 15:44,11-8. After a made free throw by Matt Karpowicz cut the Falcons' lead to two, Marcos Soto dunked on a rebound off a missed three by Heskett and tied the game at 11. Two free throws from Kyle Scadlock broke an 11-11 tie, and put the Ephs up 13-11. Two straight threes by Spivy boosted the Ephs to a eight-point lead, 19-11 and lead grew to 10 when Marcos Soto found Matt Karpowicz down low for a dunk, 21-11 with 12:32 left in the half.
The Falcons were scoreless for almost four minutes until a free throw by Damian Grant cut the Eph lead to nine, 21-12. The first Falcons basket came on a layup by Tyreek Perkins at 11:12. And made the score 23-14 Williams.
Two free throws by Marcos Soto gave the Ephs a 27-14 lead with just under 10 minutes left in first half. A dunk and a turn around jumper by Matt Karpowicz boosted the Eph lead to 41-27 with 2:35 left.
A floater in the lane by Davon Warner with three seconds left in the half brought the Falcons within 10 at the break, 43-33.
At the half Damian Grant led the Falcons in points with 8 and on the glass with six rebounds. The Ephs were led in scoring and rebounds by Matt Karpowicz who tallied 12 points and collected seven boards.
Albertus Magnus was 13-36 from the floor (36.1%) and 2-11 from three (18.9%) and 5-11 from the charity stripe 945.5%. The Falcons committed nine turnovers and out rebounded the Ephs 26-24.
Williams hit on 16 of 34 from the floor (47.1%), an uncharacteristic 2-15 from distance (13.3%), but were 9-12 form the free throw line (75%). Williams turned the ball over six times in the first 20 minutes.
Davon Warner hit a jumper on the first possession of the second half and the Eph lead was now eight, 43-35, but James Heskett answered with his own jumper and added a three to make it 48-35.
A Jamhmerikah Green-Younger three from the left corner cut the Eph lead to nine, 49-40 at 16:46. At 15:49 a three from the top of the key from Bobby Casey and the Eph lead was now 14, 54-40, with under 16 minutes to play. A Heskett pass to a cutting Mike Kempton for a layup gave the Ephs a 16-point led with 15:00 minutes remaining.
A long Jahmerikah Green-Younger buzzer beating three cut the Eph lead to 13, 56-43, with 14:44 left.
The Falcons got the Eph lead under 10 on a traditional three-point paly by Qualon Wilkes at 12:58 and two free throws by Terry Dawkins made it a seven-point game and then Dawkins rebounded his own miss in the lane to make it a five-point game, 58-53, with 11:47 to play.
James Heskett broke the Eph scoring drought with a three from the right side and the lead was back to eight, 61-53. Heskett then scored inside to make it a 10-point lead 63-53, forcing Albertus Magnus to call a full timeout.
Out of the timeout the Ephs went to a 3-2 zone on defense. A Terry Dawkins tip-in broke the Eph run of 10 straight points.
A Bobby Casey layup and two free throws by Kyle Scadlock boosted the Ephs into a 72-55 lead and with a three from the right corner by Heskett and the Eph lead had ballooned to 20, 75-55 with under eight minutes remaining. The Eph lead grew to 22, 79-57 with a free throw by Henry Feinberg with 6:21 left. A three from the right by Jahmerikah Green-Young corner stopped the Eph run and left the Ephs up 22, 82-60.
Davon Warner hit a three from the right corner to cut the Eph lead to 20, 83-63 with 2:33 left. A rebound put back by Eph Spencer Spivy closed out the scoring in the game as the Ephs prevailed 85-67.
Albertus Magnus was 24-67 from the floor for 35.8%, 6-25 from three (24%), and 13-20 from the free throw line (65%).The Falcons committed 19 turnovers, grabbed 44 rebounds
Jahmerikah Green-Young led the Falcons with 19 points and Terry Dawkins netted 12, while Tyreek Perkins grabbed seven rebounds.
The Ephs were led by James Heskett with 24 points and Matt Karpowicz and Bobby Casey both tallied 14. Karpowicz collected a game-high 8 rebounds. Williams had 43 total rebounds and committed 12 turnovers.
The Ephs shot 30-63 (49.2%) from the floor, 9-32 from three (28.1%) and 16 for 22 from the free throw line (72.7%).
