HENLEY ON THE THAMES, UK — Peter Wells varsity 1 boat was one of 18 boats to qualify for the 2008 Henley Regatta Saturday at the Thames Valley Park Regatta.
There over 120 colleges and university boats attempting to qualify for the Temple Challenge Cup, held every year since 1990 at the Henley Royal Regatta, and only 32 were allowed to do so, with Williams being one.
The Ephs begin the race for the Temple Challenge Cup Wednesday at 10:35 a.m., UTC (Coordinated Universal time). Williams will race the boat from Oxford Brookes B.
Henley Regatta was first held in 1839 and has been held annually ever since.
Unlike multi-lane international regattas, Henley still operates a knock-out draw with only two boats racing in each heat, according to is web site. Races are started at 5-minute intervals.
The length of the Course is 1 mile, 550 yards. There are 19 events in total: 6 classes of race for Eights, 5 for Fours (3 coxless and 2 coxed), 4 for Quadruple Sculls, and races for Coxless Pairs and Double Sculls.
