Varsity Men’s Crew Competes at Head of the Fish, Completes Season

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY--The Williams Men's Crew competed at the Head of the Fish Regatta this Saturday.  Both the varsity crew and the novice crew were in action.

Seeking to promote competition within the squad, the Varsity Ephs boated two equal lineups for the Collegiate Eights Event.  The Williams B boat beat their teammates, Williams A boat, by about 8 seconds, finishing with an overall time of 11:24:01.  The two crews finished fourth and eighth, respectively.

On the Williams A boat's performance, stroke John Gorman'13 commented, "It wasn't our best row, but the effort was certainly there.  Everyone was really going after it today.  Hats off to both boats."

The Ephs also had two entries in the Men's Collegiate Four Event.  Again, boating equal lineups, the Williams B boat took second place behind Colgate, and a spot ahead of third place University of Massachusetts.  The boat had a finishing time of 13:23:57.  The Williams A boat's time of 13:46:84 earned them a fifth place finish, three spots back of their teammates.

It was an important day for the Novice Ephs, as many rowers made their racing debut today.  In the Novice Collegiate Eights Event, Williams raced to a second place finish.  Their time of 12:48:03 was not fast enough to overcome first place Hobart, but comfortably ahead of third place University of Vermont.  Four of the eight rowers comprising that boat were walk-ons to the sport at the beginning of the year, and had no rowing experience prior to their arrival at Williams College.

Jens Zentil'14 said, "I really had fun out there today. I think we had a great race, but we definitely learned what we have to do to be faster for the spring.  All and all pretty exciting stuff."

Williams also had two entries in the Novice Collegiate Fours Event.  In an event that the Ephs has historically been very competitive in, Williams A won the event with a time of 12:46:69.  Williams B came in twelfth with a time of 14:06:33.

The race marked the official end of the Men's Crew fall season, and the team will now turn their thoughts to the winter training months, and the spring season to follow.  From early November until their spring training trip in March, the Ephs will be clocking many hard hours in the ergometer room, as well as competing in various fitness competitions.

"This fall, we showed we have what it takes to be successful in the spring," said Captain Daniel Kenefic '11.  "We have the drive, we have the heart, we just need to get the fitness where it needs to be.  The next five months are going to have to be huge for us."
