Ephs Open Against Marietta and St. Joe’s, Brush with UPenn Lights

PHILADELPHIA, PA—The Williams College Varsity Men's Crew opened their season against Marietta College and St. Joseph's University Saturday morning.  The Ephs faced their opponents on the storied Schuylkill River, racing into a stiff headwind.

Williams had a strong first day of racing against Marietta and St. Joseph's, with both the first and second varsity boats winning their events.  They also had strong showings against the University of Pennsylvania Lightweights in a scrimmage later that afternoon.

Williams got off to a quick start in the varsity eight race, gaining nearly a length on the field in the first 800 meters.  The Ephs made a strong move at the one thousand meter mark, which pushed them even further away from second place Marietta.  The Ephs would make their way to the finish line in a time of 6:14.6, eight seconds and nearly a boat length of open water ahead of Marietta.

"I think we did a lot of really positive things for a first race," remarked Leland Brewster'11.  "I think the guys were really excited to see all of the hard work we put in over spring break give us something back.  We know what we have to work on going forward, but it's a nice start."

The Eph 2V would find similar success, besting second place St. Joseph's by nearly nine seconds.  That boat also found itself up at the start, and improved upon their margin on the other two crews throughout the race.  They won with a time of 6:20.6.

The frosh eight was pitted against St. Joseph's and Marietta's third varsity boats.  The Eph crew finished three seconds behind St. Joseph's, and two seconds behind Marietta.

The Ephs also took the opportunity to scrimmage with The University of Pennsylvania Lightweight program in afternoon racing.  Williams once against took the first and second varsity boat races with respective times of 6:09.6 and 6:24.6.  The Williams freshman faced a decisively faster UPenn crew, and trailed for the entirety of their race.

The Varsity Men's Crew Team is back in action next weekend on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA, where they will square off against Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
