Ephs Take Silver at ECACs

WORCESTER, MA— The Williams varsity men's crew team competed at the Eastern College Athletic Conference National Invitational Rowing Championships on Sunday.  The Ephs' first varsity eight came in second, finishing behind the University of Michigan, while the second varsity eight won their event and the freshman eight came in fifth.

In what promised to be a close race, the first boat lined up against Michigan, Bucknell University, Hobart College, Trinity College and Marist College.  The Ephs were strong off the start, but steadily lost ground to the Michigan crew as they settled into their base rhythms.  Down nearly a length coming into the sprint, the Ephs took over four seats in their final push to toward to line.  They came out just under two seconds behind Michigan, finishing their race in a time of 5:59.272.

The second varsity Ephs became the first Williams' 2V to win ECACs, and also the first crew in the history of the program to have an undefeated season.

In their last race of the season, Williams was down nearly half a boat length coming out of the start.  They started walking back on the field at the 500-meter mark, and by the half waypoint the Ephs had a slight lead.  They would go on to beat out Michigan by three and a half seconds—nearly a boat length.

The freshman eight put up yet another exciting performance.  Their grand final ended with five crews within four seconds of each other, and Bucknell University taking the top spot.  The Ephs fifth place finish was better than their seventh place seeding going into the event.

Williams' first varsity boat is looking forward to another opportunity to race Michigan at the Dad Vail Regatta next weekend.  They and over thirty other crews will meet on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in competition beginning on Friday.
