MIDDLEBURY, VT - In their first competitive round of the 2018-19 season, the Ephs turned in some strong play to finish 2 shots back of leaders NYU heading into Sunday with hopes of an early season victory.

Junior captain Sam Goldenring led the Ephs charge with an impressive 2-under 69 that leaves Goldenring in the lead of the individual scoring by one shot. The Ephs' #1 played a characteristically steady round highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 first, coupled with two birdies and two bogeys. Goldenring has demonstrated some strong play leading into the season during this fall and summer and looks poised for another good season.

Senior captain Jake Foehl turned in another solid performance with a 2-over 73. Foehl similarly played a steady round from start to finish with two birdies alongside four bogeys. Foehl sits tied 10th on the individual leaderboard. In his debut for the Ephs, freshman David Brewer demonstrated his value to the team with a 4-over 75. Brewer had a rough stretch on holes 11-14, making four consecutive bogeys, but rallied to play the rest of the round even par. Junior Ben Beiers turned in a 5-over 76 to round out the scoring for the Ephs. Beiers found trouble on the 15th that eventually led to a double bogey and found birdies hard to come by, but did really well to grin his way to another solid round for the team. Sophomore Beau David also shot 79.

Senior captain Jake Foehl had this to say after the round: "We got off to a slow start and really dug in and fought to get it back. That's a good sign early on that we're going to be a tough team to shake."

The first round total of 293 leaves the Ephs at 9-over par and in second place, trailing leaders NYU by 2 shots. Behind the Ephs sit Johnson & Wales University at 294 (10-over), followed by Trinity, and Amherst at 296 (12-over).

This condensed leaderboard means its anyone's game heading into Sunday, and the Ephs will hope for another strong day tomorrow to give themselves a good chance for an early victory.
