WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - With Williams and Trinity deadlocked after matching strong Saturday scores of 289 (+5) at the Willioams Spring Invitational at the par-71 Taconic Golf Club, improved weather and scoring conditions on Sunday morning had things looking like Sunday could be a classic shootout between NESCAC rivals, as it so proved.
As he has done so many times before, junior captain Sam Goldenring put the team on his back by carding a brilliant 5-under 66. After an already solid front 9, Goldenring caught fire on the back, making birdies on holes 11, 12, 13, and 15. Goldenring's exceptional play was immense for the team effort on Sunday, and vaulted him from a tie for fifth to a tie for the lead in the individual competition.
Sophomore Beau David and senior captain Jake Foehl added another pair of excellent rounds for the Ephs with twin even-par 71's. David again struck the ball superbly, hitting a number of deep drives that set up easy pars and birdies. Foehl played great golf all day, taking a 2-under score into the 18th hole before stumbling to an unfortunate double bogey finish, but still added another great score for the Ephs.
After his heroics yesterday with a 3-under 68 in the pouring rain, junior Ben Beiers turned in another solid round of 5-over 76 to round out the Ephs' 4-man aggregate. Sophomore Wyatt Khosrowshahi and freshman James DeLano's saw their scores dropped, with a 6-over 77 and a 7-over 78, respectively.
The B team also played some great golf on Sunday, improving on yesterday's 318 by 9 shots.
Freshman David Brewer, a frequent starter for the Ephs, put in the sort of strong performance we have become accustomed to with him on Sunday, shooting a 3-over 74 to round out a solid score of 153 for the weekend.
After being the low-man for the B team yesterday, sophomore William Conyers turned in another good round with a 4-over 75. All day Conyers showcased his knack for getting the ball around the course and making putts when they matter.
Freshman Thomas Van Belle bounced back from a tough day yesterday in the form of a respectable score of 8-over 79. The rest of the B team scores included a 10-over 81 from senior captain Will Beischer, an 11-over 82 from freshman John Menton, and a 15-over 86 from sophomore Tucker van Eck.
The starting lineup finished Saturday with a brilliant score of 284 and even-par on the day, leavin them at 5-over 573 for the tournament. Despite this great effort from the Ephs, who battled all weekend, this left them just short of eventual winners, Trinity by a single shot. Having entered Saturday tied with the Ephs, the Bantams managed a 1-under 283 on Sunday to take the title by 1.
The B team finished Sunday with 309 (+25), leaving them with a solid sixth place finish for the tournament.
In the individual event, Goldenring finished in a tie for first with Trinity's Taylor Kay-Green at 3-under (139) for the tournament after his impressive round second round 66. To break the tiebreak and declare an individual champion, the two played a playoff onTaconic's first hole, a short par-5. Goldenring continued his blazing hot form to card a great birdie, which was good for another win to add to Goldenring's trophy cabinet.
Head Coach Josh Hillman, understandably proud of the team's great effort throughout the weekend, had this to say on Sunday afternoon after all was said and done: "We played really well this weekend. We fought hard and made good decisions all weekend. Unfortunately, we ran up against a really strong Trinity team and today they got the better of us. The quality of play in NESCAC golf has really taken off and I am amazed at what the top few teams are shooting these days."
"Sam Goldenring continues to produce one of the best individual seasons Williams has seen. Between his skill set and they way he thinks his way around the course it's no wonder he has become such a force in college golf."
Despite the great effort that came up just short, the Ephs look ahead to Little Three's on Tuesday at Amherst.
