MIDDLEBURY, VT - Three Eph Golfers made the trip to NESCAC Championships at Middlebury's Ralph Myhre Golf Course this weekend. Representing the Ephs were senior captain Jake Foehl, junior captain Sam Goldenring, and sophomore Beau David.
Due to adverse course and weather conditions, the ordinarily 36 hole championship was shortened to 27 holes, with the players only playing 9 holes on Saturday.
The abbreviated nature of Saturday's play yielded a predictably condensed leaderboard, meaning anything can happen come Sunday. Goldenring and David turned in matching 1-over 36's, leaving them tied for fifth and 2 shots back of Trinity's Will Rosenfield, the only player in the field currently under par. Goldenring got his round off to a great start with a birdie at the opening 488 yard par-5, but stumbled late with 2 bogeys in his last 3 holes. David made 8 pars on the day, with his only bogey coming at the 157 yard par-3 8th hole.
Foehl struggled to get off the bogey train on Saturday en route to a 7-over 42. He will hope to bounce back tomorrow in what will likely be his last round as an Eph.
Surprise package Hamilton lead the team event after day one, with a team score of 144 (+4). Middlebury sit just one stroke back at 145 (+5), followed by Trinity at 149 (+9) and Tufts at 159 (+19).
The three Ephs will look to make a charge up the leaderboard on Sunday, with Goldenring and David well-positioned to contend for the individual title.
