MIDDLEBURY, VT - Senior captain Jake Foehl, junior captain Sam Goldenring, and sophomore Beau David all put together solid Sunday rounds as individuals at the shortened 27 hole NESCAC Championships at Middlebury's par-71 Ralph Myhre Golf Course.
Goldenring led the Eph golfers with a tied-3rd place finish, shooting an even-par 71 on Sunday to finish the tournament 1-over, 4 shots back of medalist Will Rosenfield of Trinity. Goldenring made 16 pars, 1 bogey, and 1 birdie on Sunday. Despite his typically strong play, by his own high standards, Goldenring could never quite find the spark he needed to make the sort of charge up the individual leaderboard he managed last Sunday at the team's home tournament, with a 5-under Sunday 66.
David finished his round strong with a birdie on 18, but 4 bogeys in a span of 6 holes earlier in the round left David with a 3-over 74 on the day. This meant David would finish the tournament at 4-over, good enough for a tied-9th finish and another top 10 for David who has been solid all spring.
After a tough start yesterday, Foehl bounced back with a decent round of 5-over 76. Foehl made 2 birdies on the day on the par-4 3rd and 17th holes, but stumbled with a double bogey as he made the turn on the 9th. Foehl finished at +12 and in 21st place for the tournament.
Trinity College made a late run on Sunday to win the team event and book their tickets to nationals with an impressive second round team score of 281 (-3), leaving them at 6-over for the tournament. Hamilton finished 2nd, 4 shots back of the Bants, with a Sunday score 290 (+6) and 10-over for the tournament. Hosts Middlebury finished in 3rd, at 15-over, and Tufts took 4th, at 43-over.
This likely marks Jake Foehl's final event as an Eph. Foehl, who walked on to the team as a freshman, has had an impressive Williams career featuring countless memorable performances for the Ephs, and his presence together with fellow senior Will Beischer will be greatly missed in the locker room next year. Despite losing Jake, the team can take solace in the fact that it's unlikely he will be the last Foehl to play golf for Williams.
