NICHOLASVILLE, KY –  Williams junior Sam Goldenring turned in a two-under-par round of 70 Thursday at Champion Trace to re-take the lead, by two strokes, at the 2019 NCAA Div. III Men's Golf Championships.

Goldenring's 70 in the third round gave him a three-round score of 213. He was the only player on Thursday to finish with an under-par score as he birdied four of his final nine holes. The junior leads the individual field after improving upon his second-round score at Champion Trace from the day before by four strokes. Goldenring is three-under-par for the tournament as he sets his sights on his first medalist finish at a national championship.

"Just being here as an individual, it's been nice to get one-on-one with my coach (Williams head coach Josh Hillman) and pick his brain in how he would attack a hole," described Goldenring of his strategy. "I came into the week not feeling entirely sure of how my game was but I found something on the range and that's really been clicking."

Goldenring managed six birdies Thursday, two on the front nine, holes two and four. On the back he birdied 10, 11, 14 and 17.

"Sam played a very solid, stress free round of golf today," Hillman said. "He hit the targets we picked out together and was able to make a lot of his birdie putts. Keene Trace is what I would call "a big boy course". You need to drive it well and think your way around the layout and Sam has done just that, managed his game. Tomorrow we will stay patient and make good decisions."

Huntingdon's Drew Mathers scored an even-par 72 in the third round to draw into sole possession of second place on the individual leaderboard. He sits two strokes back of Goldenring entering Friday's final day of play.

The fourth and final round of the NCAA Division III National Championships will begin at 7:30 a.m. with three-man groups each teeing off at the first and 10th holes of Champion Trace.
