NICHOLASVILLE, TN – Williams College junior Sam Goldenring established himself as the top male golfer in NCAA Division III by winning medalist honors at the 2019 NCAA DIII Championship.

Holding a three shot lead entering the final 18 holes of the tournament, Goldenring needed to just play smart and efficient golf to protect his lead. Goldenring entered the fourth and final round with that three shot lead as he was the only player in the field of 216 to break par in round three

While Goldenring was winning top honors at the men's championship, Williams College senior Cori Chan was winning top honors at the NCAA DIII Women's Championship in Texas.

Opening three under through the first six holes, Goldenring took control of the day early on. However a bogey on eight and double bogey on nine brought him back to even par.

Goldenring settled down on the back nine and he notched a par on every hole to keep his score level with par. Today Josh Gibson from Hope College was the only player in the field to finish under par, but his one under par was not enough to supplant Goldenring atop the leader board.

Eph head Josh Hillman on hand to coach Goldenring noted, "What an amazing day. To take down a field like this is a big, big achievement."

"We worked really close together this week," stated Hillman. "It is the most involved I have ever been with a player. Sam and I have a strong relationship and that helped us during the stressful time out there today. I can't say enough about how well he represented Williams and what a great feather in his cap this is. We wish the rest of the team was here as this would have never been possible without them."

"Obviously I couldn't be happier about today's result," Goldenring stated. "I stayed patient the whole day and tried not concern myself with where I stood on the leaderboard because I knew that if I played my game and focused shot to shot I would have a great shot at winning at the end of the day."

Hillman added, "Sam is the hardest worker I have ever coached. Not only is he a hard worker, but also he goes about it the right way.  He asks great questions, he uses his time wisely and is constantly pushing himself.  A lot of sweat went into that trophy and we (the Williams team) are very proud of him."
