BRUNSWICK, ME -- The Williams Ephs (10-4-1, 6-2-1 NESCAC) were defeated by the Bowdoin Polar Bears (6-7-3, 3-5-3 NESCAC) 0-1 tonight at the Sidney J. Watson Arena. Bowdoin's freshman Cody Todesco scored the sole goal of the game early on in the second period to extend the Polar Bear win streak to two.
This loss ends the Eph win streak of five games, the longest win streak for Williams Men's Hockey since the 2005-2006 season. This is the second victory for the Polar Bears this week, after having topped the University of New England on Tuesday, where they came away with the 4-3 win.
In a rather evenly matched contest, the strong goaltending made for a tight match tonight in Brunswick. In net for the Ephs tonight was freshman Michael Pinios, in net for his ninth start of the season, and in net again after tending the goal in the Plattsburgh State upset last weekend. Pinios comes into this match with a .958 save percentage. In the opposite crease was Bowdoin's sophomore Peter Cronin, who came into this contest with a .932 save percentage. This marked Cronin's 13th start of the season, and he made 33 saves in the contest to earn himself a shutout. Pinios also gave a commendable performance, stopping 29 of his 30 shots faced.
Bowdoin took the lead in the game early on in the second period. At just :36 seconds into the second, standout Polar Bear Cody Todesco fired off his eighth goal of the season, sniping one past Pinios on a play assisted by teammates Spencer Antunez (fifth assist) and Chris Wallace (third assist). This brought the game score to 1-0 for Bowdoin, and they were able to maintain this lead for the remainder of the contest.
There were no power plays in tonight's match, just one minor apiece for the two teams, negating the man advantage effect. Williams came away from the match with the shots on goal advantage, game totals rounding out at 33-30.
As a result of this game, Williams and Bowdoin has split the season series, each team coming away victorious in their home arena (in the Ephs' season opener on November 21st, Williams came away with a 4-1 triumph).
Bowdoin next plays Middlebury tomorrow at the Watson Arena at 4:00 PM. Williams faces off against Colby tomorrow on the road at 3:00 PM.
