NCAA DIII TOURNEY HISTORY: The Williams Ephs are making their first NCAA Tournament appearance, while the Salem State Vikings are making their eighth NCAA DIII tourney appearance.
The Vikings own an NCAA Tourney record of 6-10-1 and they have advanced to two Final Fours (1992 & 1994). The Vikings last played in the NCAA DIII Tourney in 2014.
Williams posted the best NESCAC regular season record (14-2-2) this winter and was awarded a Pool C berth in the tourney.
Salem State earned an automatic berth in the tourney by winning the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament.
Back in the 1980s and 1990s the Ephs and Salem State both played in the ECAC East League before NESCAC began official play in 2000.
COACHES: Salem State head coach Bill O'Neil is in his 35th year directing the Vikings. O'Neill ranks 16th all-time in all divisions in wins and winning percentage. He is 567-34-60 (.612).
The Ephs' Bill Kangas is in his 27th season leading the Ephs. Kangas is the all-time leader in wins in Williams' men's ice hockey and sports an overall record of 369-245-61 (.591). Bill Kangas was named the 2016 NESCAC Coach of the Year.
THE ADVANCING TEAM: The winner of the Salem State vs. Williams game will take on the winner of the SUNY Geneseo vs. Salve Regina contest next Saturday.
ALL-TIME EPHS vs. VIKINGS: Salem State leads the series that began in 1972-73 20-14-1. The Ephs have won the last seven games.
LAST REGULAR SEASON MEETING: The Vikings and the Ephs last met on December 5, 2008 at Salem State. Williams prevailed 5-4 in OT on a goal by Octavian Jordan at 2:10 that was assisted by Alex Smigelski and Andrew Lepore.
LAST REGULAR SEASON MEETING in LANSING CHAPMAN RINK: December 1, 2007. Williams won 4-2 with Brandon Jackmuff netting the game-winner at 17:58 of the third period and Alex Smigelski adding an empty netter.

STREAKS: Salem State is riding a 13-game win streak. Williams is 10-2-1 in its last 13 games and enters the contest off a 2-1 loss to Tufts in a NESCAC Tournament First Round game.
HONORS: Salem State goalie Marcus Zelzer was named the MASCAC Player of the Year. Viking forwards Cam Moniz and Brandon Platt were named to the All-MASCAC Team along with defensemen Gabriel Cromp and Brandon Jones.
Williams' defenseman Zander Masucci was named the NESCAC Player of the Year. Junior forward Tyler Young and first year goalie Michael Pinios were named to the All-NESCAC Second Team. Pinios was also accorded Co-Rookie of the Year laurels.
