BELLEVUE, WA – First year goalie Michael Pinios (Montreal, Que.) has added yet another honor to his ice hockey resume at Williams College. HeroSports.com has named Pinios the National Division III Newcomer of the Year.
In his debut season Pinios started 18 games and played 1083:44 between the pipes, fashioning a record of 13-4-1, which included two shutouts. He stopped 450 of 479 shots he faced for a .939 save percentage.
"Michael had a very strong first year for our team," said Eph head coach Bill Kangas. "Game in and game out, Michael's timely saves gave our team a high level of confidence. He is a player with a team-first attitude and we expect Michael and our team to build on our play from this past season."
His 1.61 goals against average was third best nationally. Pinios played a pivotal role in helping lead the Ephs to their best NESCAC regular season record 14-2-2, most wins in a season (19) and first ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
The 19-6-2 Ephs defeated Salem State at home 7-1 in their first ever NCAA Tournament game with Pinios making 18 saves.
In the national quarterfinal contest on the road at SUNY Geneseo, Pinios held the Knights, averaging six goals a game in its last four contests, to two goals in the Ephs' 2-1 loss. He stopped 24 of the 26 shots from the SUNY Geneseo attack.
Previously Pinios was named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year and to the conference's Second Team and he joined senior captain and defenseman Zander Masucci on the New England DII-III All-Star team.
