MIDDLEBURY, VT -- The Williams College Ephs (12-10-0, 8-8-0 NESCAC) defeated the Middlebury College Panthers (4-16-2, 2-12-2 NESCAC) 2-1 tonight in Panther territory. Senior C.J. Shugart scored both goals for the Ephs.
These two teams faced each other last night in Williamstown, where the Ephs came away with a last minute 2-1 victory, scoring in the final seconds of overtime.
In net for the Ephs tonight was junior Michael Pinios, who came into the contest with a save percentage of .915. In net for the Panthers was senior Stephen Klein, who made an impressive 41 saves in last night's match up.
After the first period of play, shot count was 6-5 for Williams.
The Ephs got to work quickly in the second period. At :47, Middlebury freshman Charlie Parsons was called to the box for tripping. Just six seconds later, at :53, C.J. Shugart (tenth goal) was able to fire one past Klein, on a play assisted by classmate Colby Cretella (third assist), and freshman Jack McCool (fifth assist). This brought the score to 1-0 early in the second.
At 19:50 of the second period, the Ephs doubled their lead to two goals. Shugart cashed in his second goal of the night (11th goal) on a play assisted by junior Roberto Cellini (13th assist) to bring the game to 2-0.
After two periods, shots were 16-7 for Williams.
The Panthers were able to cut their deficit in half, after Eph sophomore Will Somers was called to the box for hooking. At 8:15, freshman Alex Heinritz (second goal) was able to get one past Pinios, assisted by senior David Belluche (fourth assist) and freshman Eric Jeremiah (first assist). This brought the game to its final score of 2-1.
Shots were 25-17 after 60 minutes of play. With this win, the Ephs proved victorious in both games in the Williams vs. Middlebury series this season.
Next week, Middlebury takes on Hamilton at home, Saturday February 17th at 4:00 PM. The Ephs take on Amherst at home on the 17th, with puck drop at 3:00 PM.
