Middletown, CT–The Williams Ephs (7-4-1, 5-2-1 NESCAC) fall to the Wesleyan Cardinals (6-3-1, 5-0-1 NESCAC) 5-0.
Two back to back goals in the first period gave the Cardinals an early lead into the game. The goals came at 6:19 and 8:16 and were scored by freshman Tyler Levine (assisted by freshman Stephen O'Connor and junior Spencer Fox) and senior Vincent Lima (assisted by junior Walker Harris).
Although the Ephs were able to get three more shots off (10) on Wesleyan goaltender junior Tim Sestak, none of the Eph shots were able to convert to points. Senior Eph netminder Michael PInios was in net for the Ephs this afternoon and was able to save five out of seven of the Cardinal's first period shots.
Fresh out of the locker room, the Ephs looked forward to the second and third period to try to equalize the game after going two down after the first. The Ephs skated hard through the first half of the second period but still could not get a shot through Cardinal netminder, Tim Sestak. Instead of the Ephs halving the Cardinal lead, Wesleyan extended their lead to three at 9:53. Junior Tyler Wyatt got the puck past PInios for the Cardinal's third goal of the game and Fox's second assist.
Shortly after Wyatt's goal, the Cardinals scored again at 13:27. After assisting on the first and third goal, junior Spencer Fox scored a goal of his own with an assist from sophomore Michael Zandi and freshman Tyler Levine. The Cardinals were not finished scoring yet and still charged forward. They scored a late second period goal at 18:02 to extend their lead to five. The goal came from junior Walker Harris, assisted by senior Chad Malinowski and Spencer Fox.
And though the Ephs continued to press into the Wesleyan defensive line, they could not post a goal and Tim Sestak would walk away with second shutout of the season.
The Ephs will continue their play on the road with a game against Manhattanville on January 11 at 3:30pm.
