Amherst, MA–Williams College Ephs (14-7-2, 10-5-2 NESCAC) fall to the Amherst Mammoths (12-6-4, 9-4-4 NESCAC) 4-3 in over time.

Tonight was the second time these two rival schools went up against each other this season. Earlier, the Ephs claimed victory over the Mammoths 4-2.

The Mammoths took the early lead with a goal just 3:16 into the first period. Amherst freshman Stephen Rex was to the right of Eph netminder, senior Michael Pinios, when he found the upper corner. Rex was assisted by classmate Sean Wrenn and senior captain Phil Johansson. The Mammoth trio struck again just minutes later to extend the Amherst lead. This time, Wrenn got the goal from the blue line at 7:37 with Rex and Johansson with the assists.

The Ephs fought hard to at least halve the Mammoth lead by the end of the first but ultimately could not break through Amherst goaltender, sophomore Michael Cullen.

Early in the second period, however, the Ephs finally posted their first goal to halve the Mammoth lead. The goal came at 4:38 and was scored by freshman Niko Karamanis who caught the upper corner from the far side. Karamanis was assisted by junior Wyatt Glover and sophomore Tyler Scott.

The one goal deficit was short lived when Amherst regained their two goal lead with their third goal less than two minutes after the Ephs' first goal. Rex deflected his second goal of the game at 5:47 with assists from Wrenn and junior A.J. Klein.

The Ephs were determined the claw their way back and managed to score two late second period goals to tie the game 3-3. The Ephs' second goal came from sophomore Nick VanBelle at 12:26 who was able to trickle the puck in from a shot behind the net. He was assisted by seniors Marcus Mollica and Roberto Cellini.

The one goal deficit after VanBelle's goal was reminiscent of earlier in the second period. This time, however, the Ephs were the ones to score again. At 18:29 sophomore Jack McCool scored an unassisted goal after intercepting a pass in the Amherst zone to tie the game going into the third period.

The third period played evenly with both teams trying to get the upper hand. The two teams played too evenly and neither could finish a scoring opportunity during the period. The game was sent to a five minute, sudden death overtime.

Half way through OT, the Mammoths got the opportunity they needed to win the game. Junior P.J. Conlon skated into the neutral zone and crossed a pass to Johansson. Johansson one-time a wrist shot over the shoulder of PInios to end the game.

"We played really well in the second and third period to tie up the game. It's a tough loss but that's the way it goes sometimes," head coach Bill Kangas. "Our goal tomorrow is capture how we played the last two periods and play that way the whole game tomorrow."

The Ephs will play their final regular season game tomorrow at 3pm against Hamilton.
