Ephs defeated by Colorado College

Colorado Springs, CO  The Williams College Ephs (4-4/3-1 NESCAC) were defeated by the Colorado College Tigers (9-1) 18-14 in today's match-up on Washburn Field on the campus of Colorado College. 

The Colorado College Tigers were coming off of a close 14-13 victory last year against the Ephs and wanted to prove a point this afternoon. From the get-go, the Tigers won the opening face-off and found a man-up opportunity less than one minute in that translated into a goal by Tom Haller assisted by Tyler Borko. Swiftly, Williams answered with a goal from senior captain James McFarland. For the remainder of the quarter, the Tigers were able to shut out the Eph offense and scored four unanswered goals by Robbie Stern, Sam Mathai and two from Tyler Borko; giving Colorado College a 5-1 lead.

With the momentum from the first quarter, Tyler Borko found his third goal of the game for the Tigers to give Colorado College a five-score lead. One minute later, Greg Plumb for the Ephs put one in the back of the net to bring Willams back into the ball game. This was soon countered by an unassisted goal from Colorado's Robbie Stern to bring back the lead to five. Less than three minutes later, the Ephs gained a surge of momentum that led to six unanswered goals by Brendan HoffmanJared StraussJames McFarland and three from Cory Lund to give Williams an 8-7 lead. With just thirty-six seconds left in the first half, Colorado College scored to tie up the game off of a goal unassisted from Aaron Maslow. The score at halftime was tied up at 8-8.

Colorado College came out of halftime with an accelerated pace of play and Tyler Borko found his fourth goal of the game to give the Tigers back the lead. Williams soon regained possession of the ball and an assist from John Hincks to Cory Lund tied up the game once again. The Tigers than scored three straight goals from Robbie Stern, Sam Mathai and Billy Hutchison to give Colorado College a 12-9 lead. Within thirty seconds of one another, Jared Strauss and John Hincks netted a goal each to bring the Ephs back to just a one score game. Within the final minute of the quarter, Tyler Borko scored his fifth goal to give the Tigers a 13-11 lead.

Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Williams's James McFarland netted his third goal to bring back the game to just one score. The Tigers soon brought back the two-goal lead with a goal from Robbie Stern, his fourth goal of the day. Less than ten seconds later, freshman Alex Kitt scored to bring the Ephs back to within one score but a goal from Colorado's Tom Haller evened this out. At 7:52, Kevin Stump scored for Williams. For the remaining six minutes of the game, Colorado College took control and shut the Ephs out while netting three goals, one from Max Rieser and two from Tyler Borko. 

The Ephs used one goalie this game, George Peele, who made 9 saves. The Tigers also used one goalie this game, Andrew Harwood, who made 11 saves.

Colorado College was led by Tyler Borko who had a whopping seven goals followed by Robbie Stern with four goals. The Ephs were led by Cory Lund with four goals along with senior captain James McFarland with three scores.

Eph head coach George McCormack stated, " I felt that it was a game of runs and unfortunately they had the last big run in the 4th quarter."

The Ephs return to action this coming Wednesday at Tufts University for a NESCAC matchup taking on the Jumbos at 6pm. The Colorado College Tigers will next play away against Whittier College on Saturday at 1pm.
