WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - George McCormack's Williams College men's lacrosse team opened last season by winning four of its first seven games, including three NESCAC matchups (Trinity, Connecticut College, and Bates) and advanced to the NESCAC Tournament semifinals.
During the 2017-18 season, the Ephs offense averaged an impressive 10.7 goals per game, however the 2018 Ephs finished the year at 9-8 and 6-4 in NESCAC.
Last season started and ended with the Ephs facing Little Three foe Wesleyan. In the season opener on Farley-Lamb Field Wesleyan edged the Ephs 9-8 and at Wesleyan in the NESCAC Tournament semifinals the Cardinals won again.
The 2019 Eph season begins on March 2 when the Ephs travel to Middletown, Conn. to face Wesleyan at 1:00 PM. Wesleyan is currently ranked #1 in the NCAA DIII national poll.
Key losses to graduation include Henry Hobbs (Defense), Nicholas Fils-Aime (Defense), James McFarland (Attack), Greg Plumb (Midfield) and Benjamin Fox (Midfield).
Only seven of the fifteen regular season games for the Ephs will be at home this spring with the nearest away contest on March 6th at 6:00 p.m. versus the Dutchmen of Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.
The Ephs will play three teams on their schedule currently ranked in the USILA Preseason National Top 10: Wesleyan (1), Amherst (3) and Tufts (4).
Coach McCormack is also excited that his schedule will once again feature a 2-game trip to Colorado Springs, Colo. during Spring Break to play Colorado College and MIT after a NESCAC matchup in Williamstown against Bates.
McCormack feels that the defense can be a great place of growth on this year's team. Seniors Cameron Brown and Mack Rush anchor the defense with Kyle Horihan and Jacob Lazris expected to see significant minutes there as well. Matt Hogan and Rock Stewart will be the long stick middies.
As for the Eph offense McCormack noted, "We graduated one of our top scorers from last year (James McFarland) so we're looking to see some underclassmen contribute and take on role on for us." McCormack will look to junior Kevin Stump who netted a whopping 42 goals last season along and midfielder John Hincks who scored 14 goals to lead the offense. Other standout players on the Eph attack to watch are sophomore Cory Lund, junior Ryan Gibbs, and senior Riley van den Broek.
Major contributors at the midfield position will be juniors Brendan Hoffman, Calvin Collins, Matthew Seligson, and John Hincks along with sophomore Jared Strauss. Key players at the defensive midfield position include Noah McCoy, Zachary Harleston and Ben Anthony.
Looking ahead to the season McCormack commented, "We're all very optimistic because of the amount of hard work the guys have put in during the offseason as the senior captains have done a tremendous job preparing the team. We're looking forward to playing together as a cohesive unit and enjoying the ride."
Williams will close their regular season schedule at home on Farley-Lamb Field with games against Western New England, Bowdoin, and Middlebury.
The 2019 season begins March 2 at 1:00 PM when the Ephs will face defending NCAA Division III champion and Little Three foe Wesleyan in Middletown, Conn. at 1:00 PM.
