Waterville, ME – The Williams College Ephs (10-2/6-2 NESCAC) defeated the Colby College Mules (6-5/3-5 NESCAC) 11- 6 in today's match-up on Bill Alfond Field on the campus of Colby College.
Williams took control early on and scored at 14:02 off a back-hand shot and goal by senior captain Jared Strauss unassisted to give the Ephs an early lead. Within the next four minutes, Williams scored two-straight goals, one off a quick transition and feed from defenseman Chris Burdick to Cory Lund and a shot and goal unassisted by freshman Tim Safford. The Ephs were up 3-0 in the first five minutes of play. At 8:45, the Mules mounted a comeback with two scores of their own after CJ Hassan rifled one in and Lane Kadish scored a goal of his own. Four minutes later, Kevin Stump dodged from behind the goal and launched the ball into the net to give Williams a 4 - 2 lead. With sixteen seconds left in the quarter, Williams netted one last goal off a rip from Tim Safford to bring the game to 5 – 2 in favor of the Ephs.
Colby netted the first goal of the second at 10:31 on a feed from Riley Bergstrom and a score by Charlie Lynch off a man-up opportunity to bring the deficit to two. The Ephs answered back at 3:15 with a score from defensive midfielder Noah McCoy and an assist from Kevin Stump. The Ephs were up 6 – 3 going into halftime.
Off of a quick clear at 13:04, Williams LSM Rock Stewart drove down the field and sniped a goal from fifteen yards out to bring the Eph lead to 4. Seven minutes later, the Mules netted their fourth goal of the game off a dodge and shot from Max Cushman. The Ephs were up 7-4. With twenty-five seconds left in the quarter, Cory Lund scored his second goal of the day off an assist from Michael Greenberg. Williams was up 8 – 4 going into the final quarter.
Eph Riley Hoffman netted the first goal of the fourth off a dodge from the restraining line unassisted to give Williams a five-score lead. At 5:47, Eph Tim Saffold scored his second of the game unassisted to bring the game to 10 – 4. With one-minute left in the game, Mule CJ Hassan scored for Colby to bring the goal deficit to five. Four seconds to go, Williams Brendan Hoffman scored unassisted to solidify an Eph victory. Williams defeated Colby 11 – 6.
The Ephs used one goalie this game. Sophomore Harry Gahagan had 11 saves. The Mules used one goalie as well. C.J. Layton had a whopping 24 saves.
The Mules were led by C.J. Hassan with two scores. He was followed by Lane Kadish with one- goal and one assist.
The Ephs were led by Cory Lund with two goals and one assist. He was followed by Tim Saffold and Brendan Hoffman with two goals each. Other Williams scorers were Jared Strauss, Rock Stewart, Kevin Stump, Jack Sercu and Noah McCoy.
Eph head coach George McCormack stated, "Today was a great win for our team with the playoffs on the horizon. The team played well and we're looking forward to the next three games played home on Farley-Lamb field."
The Ephs return to action this Wednesday, April 17th home when they play Western New England, taking them on at 6pm. Colby College will next play against Maine Maritime home in a match-up on April 16th, taking them on at 7pm.
