Charles Romero ’11 Finishes Strong at USL Pro Soccer Combine Netting Four of His Team’s Goals in 5-3 Win

BRADENTON, FL

– Former Eph men's soccer standout forward Charles Romero finished strong at USL Pro Soccer Combine.

Among the 100 candidates at the Combine being staged at the IMG Academies, Romero finished in the top 10 in the "beep test," an interval recovery test where the athlete runs 20 meters, touches a line, and then makes it back to the starting line before the beep. As the beep test progresses, the time intervals get smaller, making it harder to complete the circuit.

Clearly Romero's dedicated training since leaving Williams that included stints with the New England Revolution reserve team and working out with professional teams in Iceland paid off for him at the combine.

Highlighting the combine experience was the prospect of playing in three scrimmages that were observed by professional coaches in the USL and other leagues.

In is team's first two scrimmages Romero totaled about 90 minutes of action, but due to injuries he played the full 90 minutes in the final scrimmage.

Romero's final scrimmage was also the last one of the combine. Given the chance to start and play the full 90 minutes, Romero was sensational in netting all four of his team's goals in the 5-3 win. Read the uslpro.uslsoccer.com game report HERE.

And now the waiting game begins in earnest for Romero. He has done all he can to impress the coaches that were on hand in Bradenton. So now he waits to see if any of the teams observing the combine feel that they have a slot that Romero can fill.

"My agent (and coaches at the combine) said I should hear from some people, but I don't want to get my hopes up because the whole process is a crapshoot," stated Romero.

The invitation to a preseason camp cannot come too soon for the energetic Romero, but there is also no guarantee that an invitation will materialize.
