Ephs Top Coast Guard 1-0 on 94th Minute Goal by Greg Andreou

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - Williams College senior defender and captain Greg Andreou headed home a corner kick delivered by junior midfielder Chris Fleischer in the 94th minute to lift the Ephs past visiting Coast Guard (4-6-3) 1-0 on Cole Field. Williams improved to 6-3-1 on the year with the victory.

The first half of this one saw plenty of work on both sides, but with very few positive results. Runs were cut off by effective tackling, headers re-directed all over the field, and general physicality that resulted in a lack of game rhythm.

A 23rd minute cross from first year forward Will Felitto was headed on goal by sophomore Bobby Fabricant, and two outstanding opportunities from speedy first year forward Nathan Song ' were denied by Coast Guard defenders. A 37th minute bicycle kick from the Song was blocked and sent out of bounds, but would have been SportsCenter material had it found net, just inches to the right of its actual landing spot.

On the Coast Guard side, a 44th minute fast break strike from junior forward Gio Ottomanelli, one of just three first-half shots by the Bears, was grabbed by Williams senior goalie Aaron Schein to end the half on a scoreless note.

Half number two boasted a similar lack of energy and pace, especially in the opening minutes. Several free kicks either sailed out of bounds or were sent back in the direction from which they came, and countless minutes were spent by both squads running up one side of the field, only for the defense to clear it back towards the other end, wasting valuable possessions.

A 66th minute free kick by Williams was headed by Song, only to be kicked out of danger by a Bear defender on the goal line, and an 82nd minute curl from Chris Fleischer was batted away, but otherwise, neither team was able to break through on offense in a significant way in the second half.

The extra time period did not last very long. Just three minutes and 32 seconds in, Eph midfielder Chris Fleischer took a corner kick that was headed straight into the net by senior captain Greg Andreou to give Williams its second straight victory.

After the match, Williams head coach Erin Sullivan noted that his squad is still on its way to reaching its full potential, remarking  "Today was an achievement for us, we had not won in overtime yet. There is still work to be done, but I think this group has it in them to succeed."

Williams' netminder Aaron Schein saved both Coast Guard shots on goal to post a clean sheet, while Coast Guard goalie Dakota Harich saved five of six Eph shots.

Williams hosts NESCAC rival Wesleyan on Saturday at 2 PM, while Coast Guard will host WPI on Saturday at 11:30 AM.
