MEDFORD, MA -- The Williams College Ephs came into today's match in the midst of their best stretch of the season, but a five-game unbeaten streak came to an end at the hands of the still-undefeated Tufts Jumbos, who defeated Williams by a score of 3-1.
Williams drops to 8-4-2/NESCAC 4-3-2, and the Ephs are in sixth place in the conference, while Tufts improves to 12-0-2/NESCAC 7-0-2, remaining undefeated and alone atop the league table.
Tufts ranks first in league goals this season, and that is not the result of favorable luck. The Jumbos attack early and they attack often, and today's match was more of the same. In the 11th minute, junior forward Joe Braun headed a corner kick past Williams's goalie Aaron Schein, a result built up to by consistent forward movement, crisp passing, and strong ball-winning by the Jumbos midfield and defense. Braun, who was relentless and seemingly everywhere at once today, recorded two more shots within the next five minutes, both of which were saved by Schein, and a 14th minute strike from junior midfielder Zach Lane hit the crossbar and bounced out of bounds. The Eph defense stepped up for the remainder of the half and somewhat neutralized the Jumbos, but that unfortunately was only temporary.
Braun extended the Jumbos' lead to two when nn a 56th minute fast break, he ran onto a wonderfully placed pass, took one touch, and curled it past Schein.
In the 75th minute, Tufts' junior midfielder Zach Trevorrow crossed a ball into the box that was headed by teammate Mati Cano right into the arms of Aaron Schein. However, Schein was behind the goal line when he saved the shot, quickly turning what was a terrific stop into a three-score lead.
The day's scoring was completed with a 78th minute goal from Eph first year Justin Adams, who poked the ball in from the middle of a point-blank range scrum.
Eph goalie Aaron Schein recorded six saves on the day, while Tufts goalie Connor Mieth saved three Eph shots.
Williams finishes the regular season by hosting Middlebury on Tuesday at 3 PM, while Tufts travels to Bowdoin on Tuesday at 2:30 PM to conclude its schedule.
