WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - In a brutal encounter where it felt like every match could have gone either way, the Ephs fell to Dickinson by the skin of their teeth.
Back using the three court system, the first players on were freshman Wyatt Khosrowshahi (#3) and senior co-captains Mason Elizondo (#6) and Jamie Havran (#9). All three players were defeated in tough matches that could have gone either way, with Khosrowshahi and Elizondo falling 3-1 and Havran finishing just short in a 3-2 battle. With the Ephs trailing 3-0, the next players on court were sophomores Will Means (#2) and Claude Smith (#5), as well as senior co-captain Andrew Litvin (#8). Means faced a very skilled opponent and was beaten 3-0, leaving the team trailing 4-0 and one individual loss away from defeat in the match. Smith and Litvin each played terrific matches and pulled out heroic 3-2 wins over strong opponents, dragging the team back to 4-2 and giving the Ephs a sniff as the last wave of players took the court. Last on were sophomores Carl Shuck (#1) and David Pincus (#4), and freshman AJ Solecki (#7). Pincus put in an excellent performance and bested his opponent 3-0, taking the match back to 4-3 and giving the Ephs a real shot at finishing off a huge comeback. After losing the first game, Shuck put in an incredible performance and took his extremely skilled opponent into five games before eventually falling 11-9 in the final game in what proved to be an all-out battle, rounding off the victory for Dickinson. After Shuck had finished, Solecki continued to fight hard to earn a solid 3-1 win over his opponent. Freshman Tucker van Eck also picked up his first career win in an exhibition match against a solid Dickinson player.
While heartbreaking in the end, the Ephs took a lot of positives out of this hard-fought match. Senior co-captain Jamie Havran commented: "I couldn't be prouder of how the team played today. Everyone went out and gave it their all from start to finish."
The Ephs will look to pick up their first win of the season tomorrow against Hamilton at noon.
