Williams Fall to Yale in Tough Season Opener

Williams Fall to Yale in Tough Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, CT - On Friday evening at Yale's Brady Squash Center, the Ephs were beaten 9-0 by the Bulldogs in what always appeared to be a tough test against the #5 ranked team in the nation.

The match was contested using the 5 court system, and for the first time the Ephs played in the CSA's new random order of play, in which the order of matches for each weekend is determined randomly on the Thursday before the weekend's matches. The order of play for this weekend's 5 court system was: 2,1 / 3,4 / 6,5 / 7,8 / 10,9, with the exception that the #1's played before the #2's as requested in advance by Yale.

The Ephs' first wave of play featured some strong efforts by the men despite no points on the board. Making his debut in the #1 spot, junior Wyatt Khosrowshahi put up a solid fight, but was ultimately defeated 3-0. At the #3 spot, freshman standout Udai Pal had an impressive college debut, losing in a tightly contested 4 game match that went back and forth and could have gone either way. Senior co-captains Carl Shuck and Claude Smith played at the #6 and #7 spots for the Ephs respectively, and despite some solid spells could never quite get things going and succombed to 3-0 defeats. Sophomore Nilay Neelaveni also made his college debut in the exhibition #10 spot, and despite a 3-0 loss he will surely build on the momentum of playing his first match.

The second round of Ephs play featured some more decent individual efforts. Cousins Jacob Bassil (#2) and AJ Solecki (#4) each fought hard but were ultimately beaten 3-0. Senior co-captain Will Means (#5), along with freshmen Charles "Chas" Merrill (#8) and Will Comyns (#9), all met similar fates, with a trio of 3-0 defeats despite their best efforts.

The Ephs will look to bounce back against Dickinson tomorrow at 3pm, before playing Conn College and Hamilton on Sunday.
