Ephs Blank Dickinson for First Victory of Season

NEW HAVEN, CT - In the second match of four this weekend at Yale's Brady Squash Center in New Haven, the Ephs earned their first victory of the season in convincing fashion with a 9-0 triumph over Dickinson.

Things looked good for the Ephs right off the bat, with junior Wyatt Khosrowshahi (#1) and seniors Will Means (#5) and freshman David Pincus (#8) setting a strong pace in the first round of play. Means and Pincus each looked excellent as they made their way to comfortable 3-0 victories. Khosrowshahi faced a tougher time, as he found himself down 10-6 in the second game after taking a close first, but ultimately managed to add another 3-0 win to the Ephs' cause.

With a commanding 3-0 lead after the first wave, sophomore Jacob Bassil (#2), senior co-captain Carl Shuck (#6), and freshman Will Comyns (#9) took the court looking to cement the team victory. In a characteristic show of leadership and confidence under pressure, Shuck never gave his opponent a look and cruised to another 3-0 and another point on the board, putting the match at 4-0 to the cows. Bassil faced some tense moments, but similar to Khosrowshahi's match before him, he found his way when it really mattered and contributed yet another 3-0, to add the all important 5th point to close out the match. While Bassil was able to close out the team win, the drama was far from over, as Comyns battled his way through a 5 game thriller, before eventually winning 14-12 in the fifth for his first collegiate victory.

The last round was made up of freshmen Udai Pal (#3) and Charles "Chas" Merrill (#7), joined by junior AJ Solecki (#4). Pal put in another strong performance to back up his battle with Yale yesterday, and cruised to a 3-0 win. Facing a tough opponent, Solecki showed his grit to add another hard-fought 3-0 triumph. Merrill, like his classmate Comyns, found himself locked in another dogfight, but with his match poised at 1-1, he turned on his jets and closed it out in 4 games to conclude the 9-0 scoreline.

The Ephs take on Hamilton and Conn College tomorrow, before heading back to Williamstown.
