Ephs Take Down Tufts 8-1

CAMBRIDGE, MA - In the first round of the 2020 national championship tournament at Harvard's Murr Center, the #17 ranked Ephs (15-9), the #1 seeds in the third division, bested the #24 ranked Jumbos (7-12) by an 8-1 scoreline.

The Williams men battled from the start and never let up. Sophomore Jacob Bassil (#1), freshman Udai Pal (#4), and senior co-captain Claude Smith (#8) led off for the men in Friday's play. Smith dropped the lone point of the day, finishing second in a five game thriller after coming up just short in the crucial fifth game. Bassil and Pal each were up to the challenge on the day and won 3-1 and 3-0, respectively.

With a 2-1 lead, seniors Will Means (#3), Carl Shuck (#5), and David Pincus (#7) took to the court. Means and Pincus played characteristically clean matches and won 3-0. Shuck got off to a slow start, losing the first, but found his way to win the next three games.

With the match sealed at 5-1, the final wave of juniors Wyatt Khosrowshahi (#2) and AJ Solecki (#6), along with Charles "Chas" Merrill (#9) got their turn. The junior contingent of Khosrowshahi and Solecki each took care of business 3-0. Merrill was on the same wavelength, with a three game win of his own.

Senior co-captain Will Means had this to say following the day's play: "Strong performances all around today, set a good tone for the weekend. We look forward to Bates tomorrow".

The Eph men take on the Bobcats at 7pm tomorrow.
