Ephs Clinch Championship in Epic Final Win

Ephs Clinch Championship in Epic Final Win

CAMBRIDGE, MA – In another classic battle between the two perpetual NESCAC rivals, the Ephs edged out the Middlebury Panthers 5-4 to clinch the third division national championship and captured the Summers Cup in a fairytale sendoff for the Williams seniors.

The Ephs got off to a quick start which proved crucial at the day's end. Junior Wyatt Khosrowshahi (#2), senior co-captain Carl Shuck (#5), and freshman Charles "Chas" Merrill (#9) were the first to enter battle. Shuck and Merrill each came out flying and stormed to three game wins to give the cows a quick 2-0 lead. Khosrowshahi came out fighting but found himself 2-1 down after losing his third game convincingly by an 11-2 scoreline. Never to be counted out though, Khosrowshahi fought off two match balls to seize the fourth game 14-12, and pushed on to win the all-important fifth game 11-8 to extend the Eph lead to 3-0.

Next up were sophomore Jacob Bassil (#1), freshman Udai Pal (#4), and senior co-captain Claude Smith (#8). Bassil faced a tough opponent in fine form and succumbed to a 3-0 defeat to get the Panthers on the board. Smith got off to a good start and took his first game, but was pegged back in an eventual four game defeat to move the overall match score to 3-2. Thankfully for the Ephs, Pal was up to the task and delivered a 3-0 win, moving the score to 4-2 and one point away from a victory for the Williams men.

With the team one point from the finish line, senior co-captain Will Means (#3), junior AJ Solecki (#6), and senior David Pincus took to the court. Much to the Ephs' relief, Solecki closed his match out first and sealed the team victory. Means and Pincus fought valiantly throughout, but eventually lost by 3-1 and 3-0 scorelines, respectively.

Coach Blair Dils had this to say after the match: "We got off to a good start in the first round today which was huge. I am proud of the seniors who fought hard in their last matches, but it was really amazing to see the underclassmen step up when things didn't always go the seniors' way."

"I am very proud of the way the men played this weekend from Friday all the way to Sunday," sated Eph head coach Zafi Levy. "Every member of the team performed to the highest quality of play this season."

I am especially proud of our captains, Will Means, Carl Shuck and Claude Smith who did a wonderful job all weekend long and all season long in leading the team to its highest finish in a several years.

Last season we were also ranked number one in the Summer Cup, but we didn't win it. This season was a different story, where our kids were much more mature and seasoned and it was just wonderful to watch them play this weekend and win all three matches to win the cup."

The win closes out the season for the team, but a couple of the top male players will likely travel to Philadelphia next weekend for the season-ending individual championships.
