MIDDLEBURY, VT – With the completion of the second day of the 2017 ITA New England Regional Championships, the Ephs' still have several competitors in the mix. Action kicked off today at 9am with the quarterfinals for doubles play.
Second seeded Alex Taylor '20 and Brian Grodecki '18 were the lone Williams' tandem to survive the first few rounds of tournament play. They repeated their Friday success today with two consecutive wins to establish a semifinal opportunity on Sunday. After besting an MIT duo in a decisive 8-1 victory, Grodecki and Taylor kept the ball rolling with an 8-3 triumph over the number eight seed pair from Middlebury. Head coach Dan Greenberg commented on their performance: "Brian Grodecki and Alex Taylor continue to show they're a very tough team to beat in doubles; they'll look to keep that momentum going into tomorrow's semis as well." The Williams duo will face off against three seed Luke Tercek '18 and Grant Erken '19 from Bowdoin tomorrow at 9:00 am.
William's singles finished the day with two surviving players going into the semifinals. After finding success yesterday, Sachin Raghavan '18 and Ananth Raghavan '20 fell to the one seed and five seed respectively. However, Grodecki and Austin Barr '21 each earned spots in the semi finals after their success today. Grodecki defeated his first opponent 7-5, 7-6(7), before dispatching the five seed 6-3, 6-3 to finish the day. Likewise, Barr overcame a Colby opponent 6-2, 6-0, before defeating the two seed with a score of 7-5, 6-3. In an unlikely turn of events, Barr and Austin will face each other tomorrow to compete for a spot in the finals. "The Raghavans pushed two of the best players in D3 singles, and Grodecki and Barr beat two of the best to get to the semifinals.", Coach Greenberg reflected about their play. The head on head Eph singles action will take place at 11:00 am this Sunday.
Sunday marks the third and final day of the ITA Championships.
