NORWALK, CA – On Tuesday, the Williams College Ephs (3-1) visited the Cerritos College Falcons (16-2). The men knew that they would have a tough match ahead of them, as the Falcons had won 13 matches in a row. However, coming off a tough loss against Point Loma the day prior, the Ephs had a chip on their shoulder. Like the day before, they had a close match that could have gone either way; today, however, the Ephs came out on top, winning 5-4.
The Ephs were put into an early hole when their #1 and #2 doubles teams fell. The team of Alex Taylor '20 and Calvin Chung '21 had an extremely close match, going to a tiebreak that ended in an 11-9 defeat. The lead did not prove insurmountable, though, thanks to a victory from Jordan Sadowsky '18 and Arturo Kam '21, winning 8-6 against Beil Roca Carreras and Kwangeun Lee.
Williams had to win four of their six singles matches to clinch the victory, which they did with relative ease. In all four of their wins, the men won in two sets, with only one game closer than 6-3. Sachin Raghavan '18 came close to adding a fifth victory for the Ephs, but Alex Prokopchuk of the Falcons held on in a thrilling three set match. After the two traded sets, the third set went into a tie break, where Prokopchuk won 11-9, like his team had in doubles. Despite these two tough defeats, the Ephs had done enough to win the match.
"This was a great match for us," said head coach Dan Greenberg '08. "Cerritos is a really strong team, so it was nice to come back from 2-1 down by taking four singles matches. We're looking forward to our first Division III match tomorrow."
The win snapped the Falcons' 13-match winning streak. Tomorrow, the Ephs will hope to carry their momentum to Claremont, CA when they face the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. The match will be held at 4:00 PM PDT/7:00 PM EDT.
