PASADENA, CALIF. -- In their second consecutive victory, the Williams College Ephs (ranked 5th in NCAA DIII) defeated the Caltech Beavers (unranked in NCAA DIII), 8-1.
The Ephs stayed in control from beginning to end, winning eight of the nine matches -- the only loss coming in a close, 12-10 match tiebreaker. Williams won five of six singles matches while sweeping the doubles in impressive fashion. All three doubles matches were decided by a lopsided margin, with no Caltech duo managing more than two games in a single doubles match.
In singles play, the Ephs won five of six matches. Four of the Williams victories came in two sets, with sophomore Calvin Chung's 6-1, 6-0 victory especially standing out. The fifth was decided by a match tiebreaker that junior Ananth Raghavan won, 10-8. Caltech's one victory came courtesy of Varun Shanker, who overcame a 0-1 set deficit to defeat Williams sophomore Arturo Kam in a second match tiebreaker, decided by the close 12-10 margin.
But Kam -- along with five of his teammates -- more than made up for the one loss in doubles play, which the Ephs dominated. Kam and Chung defeated the Caltech tandem of Connor Soohoo and Patryk Kozlowski 8-1. The duos of junior Alex Taylor/freshman Peter Frelinghuysen and senior Deepak Indrakanti/sophomore Austin Barr each won their respective matches 8-2.
Eph head coach Dan Greenberg was especially proud of the team's strong effort. "We played a great match today from start to finish on every court. Caltech is tough and talented so we had to be ready and we were."
Tomorrow, Williams faces Emory -- "a big test," in Greenberg's words -- and will attempt to extend their winning streak to three.
