FULLERTON, CALIF. -- The Williams College Ephs (ranked 5th in NCAA DIII) snapped a 2-match losing streak with a 7-2 victory over the Hope International University Royals (ranked 17th in NAIA).
The Ephs played strong in both doubles and singles play, winning two out of three doubles matches along with five out of six singles matches. Following the win, the Ephs climbed to 3-3, at .500 with one remaining match on their West Coast trip.
The Hope Int'l duo of Kyle Rae and Antoine Voisin thumped Williams' team of freshman Peter Frelinghuysen and sophomore Calvin Chung in an 8-1 victory -- the first finished match of doubles play. But the Ephs came back from the early deficit. Senior Christian O'Connor and freshman Michael Medvedev took down the Royals' Jayke Ancheta and Sergio Romero. Finally, freshman Kirun Cheung and sophomore Noah Reich comfortably defeated Hope Int'l's Aleks Trifunovic and Tanishq Mahendru, 8-3, to give Williams the edge.
In singles play, the Ephs took all but one match. Three Ephs won in just two sets, with performances by Cheung and junior Alex Taylor -- each allowing their opponent to win only two games -- being especially impressive. Medvedev defeated Voisin in a tighter two-set victory, 6-4, 7-5. Reich won the first set 6-2 and dropped the second set by the same margin, but rebounded to win the third set, 6-4. O'Connor and the Royals' Eason Sun remained tied after two sets, and since Williams had already clinched the overall match at that point, the two dueled in a match tiebreaker, which O'Connor won, 11-9. Rae's win over Eph junior Ananth Raghavan represented Hope Int'l's only win in singles play.
"We played a good match against a tricky team, and I'm proud of how we bounced back from yesterday's CMS match," said Eph assistant coach Felix Sun following the victory. "We brought it today and really stepped it up in the big moments."
Tomorrow, the Ephs conclude their March tour of California with a match against the University of Chicago in Claremont.
